LG has stayed true to its word and launched the first monitor from its 5000:1 contrast ratio range in the UK.

LG's L227WT: has 5000:1 contrast ratio

When LG first told Register Hardware of its plans for a 5000:1 ratio monitor earlier this month, it claimed it would unveil one before the year’s out. It also said the contrast ratio will be a 2000:1 boost, because the highest available ratio in a monitor was previously 3000:1.

The 22in widescreen display, dubbed the L227WT, uses a technology called Digital Fine Contrast (DFC), that LG claims increases the crispness and brightness of moving images, whilst making darker images more distinguishable and reducing distortion. However, the 5000:1 ratio’s only available when a user selects Movie Mode from the monitor’s F-Engine chipset.

It has a 1680 x 1050 resolution and a response time of 2ms. LG’s built in a brightness capability of 300cd/m², which is about average for similar size monitors, and given it a 170° viewing angle.

However, LG’s also selling the monitor on its design and hopes the thin bezel, gloss black housing and touch sensitive power button will attract the consumers.

The L227WT is available now in the UK for around £190 (€215/$390).
