First Qimonda, now Hynix. Yes, the Korean chip-maker has become the second manufacturer to begin sampling GDDR 5 graphics memory chippage.
But while its German rival is pitching a 512Mb part (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/11/01/qimonda_samples_gddr5/), Hynix has a 1Gb chip - the first of its kind in the world, the company claimed - on its books.
GDDR 5 ups the maximum data throughput to 20GB/s, up a bit on the 16GB/s today's top-of-the-line GDDR 4 chips deliver. The bandwidth is 5Gb/s, delivered over a 32-bit bus.
Error compensation, adaptive interface timing and the ability to adapt the signalling characteristics to match patterns in the data being sent over the bus all contribute to the higher transfer rate.
Hynix said its 1Gb part will be fabbed at 66nm. The chip will go into mass-production during H1 2008.
