Supermicro punts 'world's densest blade'

X-Men's Wolverine may dispute claim

Supermicro has launched what it claims to be the "world's densest blade server," as part of its SuperBlade line.

A vorpal sword is another very dense blade

A vorpal sword is said to be very dense too

Unverified, of course. Guinness doesn't do world records for server blades — but as consolation: the heaviest weight dangled from a swallowed sword is 20.1kg.

So let's be satisfied to say it's a very dense four-socket blade indeed.

The SuperBlade SBA-714M-T is crammed with 16 cores and 64GB of DDR2 memory. That means a full SuperBlade enclosure can hold 160 processor cores and 640GB of DDR2 memory with ten blades per 7U enclosure.

It supports both Quad-Core AMD Opteron 8300 Series and Dual-Core AMD Opteron 8200 Series processors at all speeds. The system bus is 1000MHz using the nVidia MCP55 Pro chipset. A complete spec sheet is available here..

SuperBlade's offer Gigabit Ethernet switch modules, Gigabit Ethernet pass-thru modules and 4x DDR InfiniBand switch modules. The chassis comes with a choice of up to four 1400-watt, 2000-watt or 2500-watt power supplies.

The company has yet to return our calls seeking comment on price and availability. ®
