Pointless exercise

All these talks and never any action, just another way to spent tax payers money to yield 0% result.

I had a customer last month who tried to report a cybercrime, shes bounced from bank to police, police to bank, police to scotland yard, then on the SY page a number to call, only to be told the number is no longer in use yet still display on their website, and the woman on the other side just explained its a pain getting tons of calls and wasting time telling the punters theres nowhere else to go for help.

Is the Richard Clayton of Cambridge University who is disappointed with the Government's response to the recent House of Lords enquiry into Personal Internet Safety by any chance related to the Richard Clayton of Cambridge University who is credited as specialist advisor to the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee and who might just have had an influence on the strategy and outcomes of the Report?

I know why they havent acted

Its because one of their IT supplying donaters/loaners doesnt have the requisite staff to consult, provide or implement the services required to bring such a project together.

Oh ......hang on..... they didnt have that for the projects they are already working on....prob explains why they have failed and gone over budget.

Whilst i agree that there we some missed oppertunities a lot of work is being done around the privacy and consent of personal data by the UK government. The technology Startegy Board, EPSRC and ESRC are funding around £10m to look at these very issues. So not all bad news. Have a look at the blog

when you get a bunch of PPE students to run a country with no doctors, engineers, mathematicians, etc, actually in the Government. They gather a load of advisers around them, who are basically yes men, to tell them that the ideas they have about anything technical, be it computing, ID cards etc are all fine.

Yes, it is the same Richard Clayton and if you'd followed the link to the post in question you'd find that he fully discloses his involvement in the 2nd sentence (which links to a much more detailed post on his involvement). I don't think you can ask for much more transparency than that and I can't really see the justification for your implication of Richard acting otherwise

Full disclosure: I've known Richard for around ten years.

Surprised

Richard says that the Lords aren't stupid.. I think if you start from faulty premises, you're bound to be dissapointed.

You expected a Government to actually *do* something to help ordinary people??
