EMC announces data protection house party

EMC released a smörgåsbord of data protection products at the EMC World conference today, including a new virtual tape library line starting at *pinky to lip* one million dollars.

Disk Library 6000

The company claims its EMC Disk Library (DL) 6000 line is the largest and fastest virtual tape library available on the market. The DL6000 has up to nearly 1.8PB compressed capacity in a single unit with a rate of more than 11TB per hour. The price tag isn't anything to sneeze at either, with a starting price of a cool mill.

The appliance is based on an EMC Symmetric DMX-3 storage box.

The EMC DL6100 supports up to 1,440 disk drives per system with RAID 5 protection. The system has a maximum uncompressed capacity of 615TB and 1.845PB compressed.

The EMC DL6300 supports up to 2,400 disk drives per system with RAID 1 protection. It also has a maximum uncompressed capacity of 584TB and 1.753PB compressed.

The units are scheduled for a June release. EMC will offer data-deduplication capabilities across its entire Disk Library line, beginning early 2008.

De-duplication update

EMC's de-dupe software will get an update in June.

Avmar version 3.7 will support VMWare Consolidated Backup and run on EMC Celerra NAS systems. The software has also added new operating system and application support for HP-UX and Mac OS platforms as well as Oracle and IBM DB2 databases.

EMC claims combining Avamar and VMWare Consolidated Backup can reduce the time to backup virtual machines by 90 per cent through eliminating unnecessary data sent over the network. Avmar 3.7 starts at $26,500.

HomeBase bare metal recovery

EMC is releasing its rebranded recovery and migration software, HomeBase, after buying the IP with the purchase of UK-based Indigo Stone in March.

HomeBase works with other backup and recovery software to capture and store point-in-time profiles of server configurations required for bare metal recovery. The software will compete with Symantec's Backup Exec System Recovery.

RecoverPoint remote replication

A new version of EMC RecoverPoint continuous remote replication (CRR) and local continuous data protection (CDP) will include support for Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS). The company said the additions will improve management of backup and restores for Exchange Server and SQL Server.

EMC has also integrated RecoverPoint and EMC Replication Manager software to "centralize management" of RecoverPoint local CDP in a Windows environment. EMC RecoverPoint 2.4 starts at $83,000

DiskXtender archiving

EMC is rolling out a new version of DiskXtender for NAS, an automatic file archiving software package that migrates inactive files from primary NAS to secondary storage.

The latest version adds support for filers from NetApp along with previously supported EMC Celerra systems. The company said by freeing up space on primary storage, the software improves application performance and speeds recovery for Windows, UNIX and Linux NAS environments. DiskXtender for NAS starts at $5,699.
