Hitachi has entered the server-quality 2.5-inch HDD market, offering a 147GB drive as a part of a trio of disk drives introduced to its glam rock band-sounding Ultrastar line.
The Ultrastar C10K147 is a small form-factor 147GB drive made to cater to low-power server setups. The drive has a speed of 10,000 RPMs with a 3Gbit/sec SAS interface and 16MB buffer.
Hitachi has taken its time putting its hat into the 2.5-inch enterprise HDD ring, but is betting on IDC reports that the market will expand shipments from 2.4 million drives in '06 to 9.4 million drives in '07.
The cute widdle dwive is followed in Hitachi's trinity by the Ultrastar 15K300, built for higher-end systems. The 3.5-inch drive spins at 15,000 RPMs and holds up to 300GB, making the product's name very helpful. The drive has a 16MB data buffer and Ultra320 SCSI, 2Gb/s SAS and 4Gb/s FC interfaces.
The Ultrastar A7K1000 is a faster version of their previous 1TB HDD, doing its ultra-starry thing for less demanding systems. The 3.5-inch encased drive rotates at 7,200 RPMs with a 32MB data buffer. A7K1000's mean time between failures is targeted at 1.2 million hours.
The Ultrastar 15K300 is available now with production quantities available in the first week of May. The Ultrastar C10K147 and A7K1000 will be shipped in the second quarter of 2007. ®
