AMD: very hush hush

Where's Mr Skywalker when you need him?

Reporter's notebook AMD is bigging up its latest graphic card offerings in Tunis, but sadly we cannot reveal any of this until 14 May. What does this leave in terms of what we can report?

Let's just say that so far El Reg has learned, when in Africa, AMD execs tend to let their hair down by belly-dancing with the local, er, belly-dancer and pouring over a very laboured joke about why an 18-25 "girl" is the perfect demographic for AMD's products.

Add to this the lack of working wireless internet connections in the hotel the whole event is being hosted in, and let's just say this will likely be filed to you via an African pigeon. It might get there faster.

Recent news hasn't been too good for the chipmaker which acquired ATI last October.

There's very much a do-or-die feel to this little gathering of hacks, which descended on Tunis to see what AMD has left in the tank, especially after what was a bruising week with profits squeezed and arch-rival Intel seemingly on the march, summoning the world's tech press to Beijing for the Intel Developer Forum.

Days later AMD chose Africa as the continent to launch its latest graphics card.

AMD, Soul-searching, Luke Skywalker stylee? Perhaps... After all, we are just up the road from the now religious pilgrimage that is Tataouine.

But can we feel the force?

Who knows. Anyway, as Shane McGowan would have it, "it's time to stop rambling cos there's work to be done". Oh, and a visit to Medina's market to be had.

More of the same tomorrow, no doubt. ®
