Web 2.0 Expo Google is to round out its online applications suite with presentation software in its latest strike against Microsoft Office.
Google chief executive Eric Schmidt Tuesday unveiled a Docs & Spreedsheets add-on, giving users a way to present information and create slide shows.
Schmidt called presentation the "killer app" for the way communities work. He carefully avoided suggestions Google's presentation software is an alternative to PowerPoint, even though it represents the final installment in an online package that looks and feels like Microsoft Office, with word processing, spreadsheets, IM, and email.
"We don't think so. It doesn't have all the functionality of Microsoft Office. It's a different way to mange information. It's a better fit for the way people use the web," Schmidt said.
He did not provide a date for launch. ®
