Intel Core 2 Celerons benchmarked

As-yet-unannounced CPUs take on AMD Athlon 64

Intel's upcoming Core 2-derived single-core 65nm Celeron 400 series looks set to give comparably clocked AMD Athlon 64 processors a run for their money, if pre-release benchmarks posted on the net are to be believed.

Chinese-language website HKPEC lined up the 1.8GHz Celeron 430 and 2GHz Celeron 440 against the 2.2GHz Athlon 64 3500+. All three CPUs contain one processing core connected to 512KB of L2 cache. The Celerons run on an 800MHz frontside bus, the AMD chip over a 1GHz HyperTransport interconnect.

The 440 outperformed the 3500+ on most, but not all, of the CPU-oriented tests, clocking up top-of-the-test PCMark 05 and 3DMark 06 CPU scores, and running a range of media processing tests quicker than the others. The 3500+ came out tops in 3DMark 05's CPU tests.

The 440 lead in PCMark 05 graphics, Doom 3, FEAR and Serious Sam framerate tests, but it has to be said the 3500+ bested the upcoming Intel chip in 3DMark 05 and 06 graphics benchmarks, and when the picture quality was increased in the games just mentioned.

The Celeron 430 and 440 are expected to become available on 3 June, according to the most recent roadmap leaks. Both will be joined by the first new Pentium processors for quite some time: the 1.6GHz E2140 and the 1.8GHz E2160, both dual-core parts that, like the Celerons, are based on the Core 2 architecture.
