Fujitsu Siemens Plans goes PC for the over 50s

I don't believe it

Fujitsu Siemens will launch a desktop package for the UK’s baby boomer generation in January. And when we say baby boomer generation, yes we mean the over 50s who are even now slipping into retirement while humming the Beatles’ greatest hits as they wait for their plastic surgery appointment.

The package, likely to come in under £1,000 will include a desktop PC running Linux.

One feature, apparently is extra large keys. That should cut down the potential for mistakes, as will the locked set of apps, including an antivirus/security package. More importantly, it will include two years full support, with a technician coming round to setup the machine in the users’ home. Or sheltered housing, or whatever.

The cruel might suggest this amounts to a lifetime support promise. The even crueller might suggest having to use Linux and a chopped down set of apps might hasten the shuffling off of this mortal coil.

Still, at least without Windows the punters won’t be forced to contemplate the Blue Screen of Death.

We wanted to ask some over 50s whether they were looking forward to Fujitsu’s contribution to helping them understand this new fangled world of computers. Unfortunately, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Larry Ellison were all the day centre playing dominoes. ®
