AMD will begin punching out Socket AM2-based processors at the end of April in preparation for a June 6 launch - a date that will also see the introduction of "energy efficient" desktop chips to help the company counter Intel's performance-per-Watt strategy, the latest roadmap leaks suggest.
So claims (http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=850) DailyTech. Its information nicely complements the roadmap data presented in a slide that slipped out of the chip maker (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/02/09/amd_roadmap_65nm_desktop/) over a week ago. It revealed the upcoming arrival of the Athlon 64 FX-62, followed by the 65nm FX-64 in Q1 2007.
We now know the FX-62's power envelope. It will rate at 125W, apparently, up from the FX-60's 110W Thermal Design Power (TDP). The six dual-core Socket AM2 Athlon 64 X2s due to launch June 6 - 3800+ up to 5000+ - all sport 89W TDPs, while the two single-core parts getting the socket upgrade on the 6th, the 3500+ and the 3800+, are rated at 62W.
The already anticipated Athlon 64 X2 5200+ will ship in Q3, according to the report, alongside the 'energy efficient' dual-core Athlon 64 4800+. The 4800+ won't be the first of its kind: the 6 June will apparently see the arrival of dual-core and single-core EE Athlon 64 and Sempron desktops with TDPs of 65W and 35W, respectively.
There's one exception: a 35W dual-core Athlon 64 3800+, also said to be launched on 6 June.
A 35W Sempron 3500+ will ship in Q4, the report also claims. ®
