Systems giant Computer Associates International (CA) has scored the year's first acquisition, snapping up application management specialist Wily Technology.

CA said Tuesday it is buying privately held Wily in a $375m all-cash transaction that ramps up the competition against IBM and Hewlett Packard in systems management.

John Swainson, CA chief executive, claimed the deal meant CA would become the only company capable of managing applications, IT assets and users in mixed hardware and software environments spanning mainframe and client/server architectures.

Wily provides management tools to help customers manage and tune performance of web applications, portals, SAP's NetWeaver and web services. Customers include companies in financial services, telecoms, retail, government, healthcare and media.

Under the deal, Wily will operate as a division within CA's enterprise systems management business unit with CEO Dick Williams serving as division head. CA said it expected to retain most of Wily's 260 employees, and expects to release details of product integration during the 30 days after the deal closes.®
