Palm TX Wi-Fi PDA presented on web

Z22 and Windows Treo pics leaked too

The cat's out of the bag, Palm. A comprehensive series of photos depicting the PDA pioneer's latest models, retail packaging and specification details has surfaced on the web.

So too has some very nice snaps of the upcoming Verizon-hosted Windows Mobile-based Treo.

The new PDAs are due to be formally unveiled on 12 October, Russian fansite Mobile.Review suggests. That's a date that certainly chimes with what our sources are telling us. The site also plays host to all the pictures.

As expected, we're looking at a new Zire, now dubbed the Z22. Likewise, what had been rumoured to be the Tungsten X will ship as the T|X. Goodbye, then, the consumer and professional brand names that have stood Palm proud since 2002.

A tweaked Tungsten T5, the T|X has 128MB of Flash memory, 320 x 480 display, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Indeed, the box's tagline is "affordable Wi-Fi", though whether the anticipated retail price of $450 (£251) is truly affordable we'll leave to your own judgement.

The 149g unit measures 12.1 x 7.8 x 1.5cm - just like the T5. There's the usual SD IO slot for expansion and Palm's Multi-connector for USB synchronisation. Again, it's based on an Intel XScale CPU, this time clocked at 312MHz, down from the T5's 416MHz. Palm has always underclocked its PDAs' processors anyway, but it sounds as if it's got the speed down to a level that doesn't impede performance yet boosts battery life.

The Z22 contains a 200MHz Samsung processor backed by 32MB of Flash memory. As expected, it has a 4096-colour 160 x 160 display. It sports a new casing design which measures 10.3 x 6.8 x 1.5cm. The unit weighs 96g, so it's lighter and smaller than the Zire 21. Looks nicer, too. The price: $130 (£73). ®
