Intel, ATI and VIA increased their share of the graphics chip market during Q2, largely at the expense of Nvidia, figures from Jon Peddie Research (JPR) reveal.
Some 61.4m PC graphics chips shipped during the year's second quarter, up two per cent sequentially and 12.9 per cent year on year, JPR said.
Shipments of integrated desktop products were up 8.4 per cent, lifting the desktop segment as a whole up 2.1 per cent against a 6.2 per cent drop in discrete desktop product shipments. Around 46.5m desktop graphics products shipped in Q2, JPR's numbers show, of which 28m (60.3 per cent) were integrated parts.
The mobile side of the market showed the same pattern, only more so: discrete shipments fell 12.2 per cent, while integrated product shipments rose 10.3 per cent. The segment as a whole grew 1.8 per cent to 14.9m units more than 67 per cent of which (10m units) were integrated parts.
No wonder Intel rules the roost, taking 43.7 per cent of the graphics chip market as a whole, up from 43.1 per cent in Q1. ATI's share rose too, from 26.1 per cent to 26.8 per cent. In fourth place, VIA's market share grow to 8.1 per cent.
By contrast, Nvidia's share dropped, by two percentage points to 15.9 per cent of the market. SiS' share was down, too, to five per cent. Matrox, XGI and 3Dlabs all saw their fractional market share percentages stay the same, quarter on quarter.
In the desktop arena, Intel took 40.6 per cent of the market, followed by ATI (24 per cent) and Nvidia (18.8 per cent). ATI's desktop shipments rose 6.2 per cent during quarter, while Nvidia's fell 7.5 per cent. In the discrete segment, in which Intel isn't active, ATI's continued to lead with a 51.5 per cent share, but Nvidia's share fell from 46.8 per cent to 46.1 per cent.
Nvidia is likely to fare better during Q3, thanks to the launch of the GeForce 7800 series and, more importantly given the structure of the market, its first integrated graphics chipset, 'C51'.
"Integrated graphics shipments were up substantially in a traditionally slow period to drive overall industry growth," said Lisa Epstein, one of JPR's senior analysts. "The integrated mobile segment in particular showed strength that led to record shipments and share of the mobile market. ®
