Mosaid, Hynix settle patent spat

DRAM technology licence signed

Mosaid has licensed six memory patents to Hynix, calming the legal spat that flared up between the two companies in January.

Then, Ottawa-based Mosaid claimed the South Korean memory maker had infringed the DRAM patents, and filed a complaint with the US District Court of Eastern Texas to seek compensation. The patents cover "fundamental" elements of DRAM design, Mosaid said at the time.

The terms of the deal underpinning the settlement were not made public, but the two companies did say that their agreement gives Hynix a six-year licence to use the technologies incorporated in Mosaid's patent portfolio.

Last month, Mosaid settled similar legal action brought against Samsung in September 2001. It is currently in litigation with German memory maker Infineon, again claiming violation of its DRAM patents.

Separately, Mosaid said it recorded revenues of $16.9m for the three months to 21 January 2005, the company's third quarter of FY2005. That figure represents year-on-year growth of just over 128 per cent from Q3 FY2004's $7.4m.

Net income for the period was $34m ($2.96 a share), up from $320,000 (three cents a share) in the year-ago quarter, though the latest figure includes a one-off $28.3m tax benefit. ®
