SiS signs Intel bus licence

Adds support for 1066MHz

SiS has licensed Intel's 1066MHz frontside bus specification, a move that heralds the chip maker's support for Intel's latest Pentium 4 Extreme Edition processors.

That said, it will be some time before SiS' updated chipsets ship: the company will not offer such products until H2 2005, it said in a Taiwan Stock Exchange filing.

The document reveals SiS intends to ship updated versions of its 656 and 670 chipsets. The former will sample in Q2 before going into mass production in Q3.

Intel has already said it expects to launch dual-core P4EE processors in Q2, though volume shipments are not expected until early Q3, so SiS' timing isn't bad.

The 656 currently supports FSB speeds of up to 800MHz. It provides PCI Express support for graphics, and 400MHz DDR and 667MHz DDR 2 SDRAM support. The 670 is an integrated version of the 656, adding in a Mirage3 DirectX 9 graphics core. ®
