ATI this week introduced a mainstream mobile X-class graphics processor, the Mobility Radeon X700.

The 110nm, PCI Express-native chip incorporates eight pixel pipelines and six vertex engines. As per ATI's other X-class GPUs, the X700 provides its SmartShader, VideoShader and HyperZ technologies in their HD incarnations, along with VPU Recover, ATI's 3Dc normal map compression system and its PowerPlay 5.0 power management feature.

The X700 hooks up to dedicated video memory across a 128-bit bus, but while ATI touted the part's GDDR 3 support, we notice it also works with slower DDR and DDR 2 memory, so notebook buyers should check potential purchases' specs closely. The chip also supports ATI's AGP-esque HyperMemory technology to allow it to grab main memory as video RAM, sparing PC companies from the need to add dedicated graphics buffer memory.

ATI said it had sold the chip to notebook vendors Acer, Arima, Asus, Alienware, BenQ, Clevo, Compal, ECS, Eurocom, Fujitsu, Fujitsu-Siemens, Gateway Inc, Inventec, Lenovo, LG, Medion, MSI, Samsung, Sony, Targa, Toshiba and Uniwill. ®
