VIA pitches chipset at multi-display applications

AMD 64-bit processors find a home

VIA Technologies today announced wide industry support for its K8T890 chipsets for AMD 64-bit processors.

The chipset, for gaming enthusiasts, has an asynchronous bus architecture so hobbyists can tweak processor performance. The Pro version can support two graphics cards and up to four monitors.

Ben Boyden, marketing manager for chipsets at VIA, told a press conference in London that the firm was seeing the start of demand of multi-screen applications including gaming, workstations and professional applications.

He said demand for multi-display systems is being driven by falling prices for LCD screens - forecast to fall 27 per cent in price in 2005. Boyden said home users, especially those editing music or video, increasingly wanted more than one display. He also said there is the beginning of demand for multi-screen gaming although only Microsoft Flight Simulator and X2 currently support it.

Boyden said the firm decided not to offer 1.25Ghz ethernet direct to the chip because it believes third party solutions will offer better value and better features. He said: "There's a slight performance advantage but we believe third party solutions will offer better features." ®
