NetNames cock-up blamed for eBay detagging

Fixed in record time

Yesterday, we reported the detagging of eBay.co.uk. As we suspected, an adminstrative error was to blame. Here is the statement released today by NetNames, eBay's UK Tag holder.

We can confirm that the www.ebay.co.uk domain name was partly or totally inaccessible for a period of about 2 1/2 hours on Tuesday, December 2 as a result of the failure to renew the domain name. This resulted from an administrative error on the part of NetNames for which we take full responsibility. eBay was in no way responsible for the site access problems. Once NetNames was alerted to the problem, we immediately took steps to rapidly restore access to the www.ebay.co.uk address. The eBay UK domain name and site are now fully operational.

However, it should be noted that NetNames does offer an automatic renewal service to major corporations and brand owners as part of our comprehensive Platinum Domain Name Management Service. A Platinum Service Agreement was not in place in this case.

In any event, NetNames sincerely regrets any inconvenience this brief interruption of service may have caused the eBay UK community.

Right, so you have to have a Platinum Service agreement to ensure your site is not detagged? Sounds like a very tough negotiating tactic to us.

And ain't it marvellous how quickly Nominet pulled its finger out? Reg Reader Justin Clements notes: Interesting how it took five minutes to get this un-detagged, whereas their customer services department have a queue of 12 days!

Hmmm.

And here's another Hmm, this time from Gary Sargent:

I recently had one of my domain names detagged and it took nearly a month to get it untagged because Nominet had a huge backlog of work.

See here:

I quote "To ensure that all customers are dealt with quickly, efficiently and fairly, all requests will be dealt with strictly in date order." and "the customer support department is currently working on requests received on 26 November 2002".

How is it then that eBay was fixed within five minutes?

This does not sound fair to me?

Live is never fair, Gary. Never. ®
